How? Why? DIY! has been involved in organising this event in conjunction with Writing on the Wall so please if you get the time do come down and support it.

Copyright & Piracy in the Digital Age – Are we all criminals?

A subject which is close to many of our hearts and is a real highlight from the Writing on the Wall Festival, the issues of Copyright and Piracy are now ever present in todays society as most of the population own, have listened to or watched a pirated version of a TV programme, Movie or album. You can’t use youtube without possibily violating someone elses copyright so we have all become criminals for mere consumption of material… well that can’t be right. A proposed Government bill on Digital Copyright only saw the light of day for a week before being thrown into the long grass of politics.

This event can only help us to understand the issues behind this subject area so come along on the 3rd May.

Join Joscelyn Upendran from Creative Commons, Ian Prowse (Amsterdam), The Pirate Party, The Open Rights group and industry representatives to discuss the rights and wrongs of copyright theft and downloading.

The United States’ Stop Online Piracy Act (SOPA) and the UK’s Digital Economy Bill have have brought into focus the debate on copyright and control of online materials. Some argue for an end to all copyright, some argue for more open sharing, but with control (Copyleft), while others argue for the complete abolition of all copyright. Downloading is rife but under pressure – witness the closing down of Mega Upload and the extradition to America of hacktivists and those accidentally caught on the wrong side of the United States law. There’s no doubt these are all new problems of the digital age, but the fight for and against copyright is nothing new.For musicians it is a double-edged sword; one minute it is allowing bands including The Arctic Monkeys to build a following which propels them to worldwide fame, and the next they face losing millions as the internet allows free access to all their hard-earned creativity -and maybe they can afford it, but what about others, musicians and writers, etc. who can’t afford to let it all go for free. We may not find all the answers, but you will want to be a part of this debate featuring activists and local musicians and artists, all trying to make ends meet and make sense of the digital age.

Friday May 11th sees the return of the Rathole Roadshow for a 3rd successive year. The roadshow is a music event with a slight difference, a geeky interactive element. We’ll be connecting Rathole Radio fans around the world directly with artists and guests via message walls, chat rooms and even our fabulous audience-bot robot, built by Liverpool’s favourite boffin Mr Adrian McEwen. When triggered by fans online the bot will let off a burst of applause into the room and let them get involved, wherever they are.

In keeping with Rathole Radio itself the line up is eclectic but carefully selected, with an emphasis on local talent this time. We have:

The Corinthians – A Liverpool rap group who’ve christened their unique style “Scouse dub hop”. Blending elements of dub and reggae with the skills of some great MCs. They’ve supported Sugar Hill Gang, Ugly Duckling and the Jungle Brothers to name just a few, they know how to put on a show.

P’Chenga – Expanding on the reggae vibe these guys fuse ska and rock with energy and feeling. They also bring a live brass section to the party and their infectious grooves will get you moving your feet.

20lb Sounds – Making their third appearance at the roadshow are local rockers 20lb Sounds. No hint of bias in the fact that lead singer Dan Lynch also presents Rathole Radio *ahem*. On a serious note though these guys have been gigging around Liverpool a lot in the last year and building up a reputation for great melodies.

Thom Morecroft – Thom is a singer-songwriter who’s originally from Shrewsbury but now studies in Liverpool. The power and purity of his voice have to be heard to be believed and Dan is not the only one to notice it. Thom was recently featured at length on BBC Radio Merseyside’s Folkscene program and the future looks very bright.

Join us at LEAF On Bold St, Friday May 11th @ 8pm – ENTRY IS FREE but donations are always appreciated.

You can also get a free EP show casing all of the artists here – ratholeradio.org/sampler

For a physical copy of the free EP, an interview or anything else please contact Dan Lynch: show@ratholeradio.org

How Why DIY CIC – a bit of a mouthful now with the CIC on the end but as we have been doing a great deal of work and plan to do more it was only fair to incorporate. We have incorporated to or aim to.

run events that promote community focus for creative technologists and offer workshops to the wider community.

The Community will benefit from educational, networking and cultural events whose aim is to promote the understanding of and highlight the benefits of technology. We will do this by running the How Why DIY network and subsequently events that explore issues relating to digital technology and access to new skills.

This will benefit the community by giving them access to a network of like minded technologists to access knowledge sharing, skills development and creative technology skills and equipment. Events will raise awareness of contemporary issues and encourage engagement with digital technologies by providing pathways for further exploration and learning (both formal and informal).

The establishment of new groups will stimulate the development of progressive ideas – so join up and progress those ideas.

If you’re not familiar with the Bar Camp concept they are participant led unconferences where the talks and discussions that take place are set by the people attending – anyone can and is encouraged to run a session on any topic they want so the whole event is driven by the conversations and interactions of the people attending.

I have to say I am so converted to the idea of participant led unconferences (just take out the un) that I create my own and really encourage others to do so to. Most conferences consist of stale cofee and boredom listening to a speaker who does not know their salt. At a barcamp you still get the stale coffee but if the speaker bores you, you simply walk away – Yeah to that. And then you hold your own session on a subject that grips you.

This won’t be Liverpool first Barcamp and it certainly won’t be the last but they need to happen more often and with new faces and new subjects being covered. The last one i attended was the first Liverpool one and I went to a talk about WordPress from Dave Coveney, another on telephone numbers being the next big thing, one about the capital of culture and a big plenary session with prizes – I won nothing. I am sure there were others but i wasn’t allowed to stay to long as the powers that be needed my presence.

Barcamps do tend to be Technology related but they don’t have to be and you could come along and talk about a subject that is of interest to you. There is only one previso on that and it is that it is a popularity contest so if no one turns up for your talk then that is it. So you need to make it interesting. I am saying all this and i need to come up with some talks for the Barcamp myself. er……..

BARCAMP LIVERPOOL is this weekend 17-18th November

Anyway the first round of tickets are available now at http://barcampliv2011-does.eventbrite.com
