Whether it’s getting started sharing your group’s stories and aims through blogging, forming a community around a Facebook group, or reaching out and engaging new supporters and service users through Twitter, our volunteer will be on-hand with suggestions on how to effectively use social media to promote an important cause.

Following on from our successful ‘Show & Tell’ events, Manchester Girl Geeks are hosting a BarCamp – an all-day interactive ‘unconference‘, where the talks are provided by attendees, and the programme isn’t known until the conference is under way! Think of it as a big, all-day Show&Tell!

Typical topics at BarCamps include technology, science, mathematics, or anything else that’s geeky and fun! Share your knowledge, passion and enthusiasm with other like-minded nerdy types. As with all Manchester Girl Geeks events, male attendees are welcome – to make sure we’re balanced, it would be great if you could bring along a female friend or girl geek. It’s a win/win/win situation, right?

The event is free to attend, and refreshments will be provided. Bring your laptop, tablet, phone or other wi-fi enabled device, and anything you want to share!

Event Details

Girl Geeks BarCamp Manchester will be held on Saturday 16th March 2013, and will run from 10am-5pm. The event will take place across both floors of MadLab, 36/40 Edge Street, in Manchester’s Northern Quarter.

The ground floor talks and toilets are wheelchair accessible, and the venue has free wi-fi and power sockets for your laptops.

We also have some funds available to contribute towards costs for child care and accessibility (e.g. taxis). It won’t be a lot, but we’re hoping to help make the BarCamp as accessible as possible for everyone! You will have to notify us before the event so we can consider you for funding.

Once tested, these courses will be available for around £850 a day. But you can take advantage of the almost finished product, right now, for absolutely nothing. Nada. Zilch. Zero.

The first course is a general communication skills course. It looks at the processes that drive communication: how things happen the way (and why) they do, and what you can do to communicate more effectively.

The course will be held on Monday February 11th, at the LJMU Open Labs Studio, on Mount Pleasant (by the Catholic Cathedral) 9.30am-4.30pm

This training is open to anyone, but booking is essential as places are limited.

We have taken in a few PC’s in the past to recycle and to use on other projects – so you can see the handsome monitor which we use at Jelly Liverpool. But we really wanted to find out what the interest was from the group about PC recycling.

Our plan is to set aside a Saturday every month to take in working laptops and recycle them, in other words fitting them with Linux and passing them back out to members of the community who need them most.

Expanded profiles

One thing that members have been asking about it expanding their profiles so they can include more information about their skills and experience so other members can contact them if they would like to collaborate on projects. So we have now added this option in.

Opportunities

We’ve also started to ask members if they are interested in delivering workshops and seminars on their key skill areas. We are being approached by organisations who are looking for experts in their field so if this is you then let us know.

Shop and E-commerce

We’ll shortly be fitting an ecommerce package to the site so you’ll be able to show off your products and sell them through here. We’ll also be selling off our range of repurposed kit from laptops to Macs from Recycle IT a new mini project to encourage more people to reuse no longer needed laptops.

Guest Blogging

If your interested in writing a guest post or even in reposting your favourite post from 2012 to get more response then let us know as we want to invigorate the conversations and collaborations between our members. We want to see more activities taking place in 2013 than we have seen throughout the whole of the 2 years we have been in existence.

So onward and upward in 2013!

Members of the community are invited to present on a subject they are passionate about at these quarterly events.  We have had some great presentations from a wide variety of people and you don’t have to be techy to do it, you just need to know how to put a presentation together.

Jelly Liverpool is a twice monthly event aimed at creative and digital freelancers. It invites them to come together and co-work in a City Centre based Cafe for the day.
