    Open Source City

Public Group active 4 months, 1 week ago

A group who wish to help with the delivering of Open Source City

Open Source City is a ‘permanent festival’ and celebration of an open sharing of creative and disruptive thinking, information and technology use to change the way our world works, artists, technologists, thinkers and makers radical and conservative.

We say permanent because we want this to be a supportive platform for the amazing stuff that goes on already in the city that has a connection to the idea of open information: so open data, open source software, open hardware, open collaboration, open source swan pedalos. We dont want to be the best festival in the world we want it to be about sustaining and commissioning new work in the city and sharing it on a public platform.

Making Liverpool a more open place to live, work, play and breathe.

    It aims to:
    • Make Liverpool a centre of openness and creative thinking
    • Highlight amazing work by artists and creatives across the city
    • Encourage a sharing of information and innovation
    • Create events that challenge traditional thinking
    • Encourage radical and disruptive thinking and approaches
    • Be open

Open Source City (OSC) is a ‘permanent festival’ and celebration of the open sharing of creative and disruptive thinking to change the way our city works.

Artists, technologists, thinkers and makers, both radical and conservative will show how the opening up of data and information are changing society and culture.

In the summer of 2012 Open Source City will take place through a diverse range of partnerships and venues across the city.

That sounds great. It would be really good to get this sort of thing running as part of Open Source City. Expand it beyond circuit boards and program code.

Think I mentioned this below Dan, its a project by Fred an artist at STATIC he might be up for doing something like it and Diane Guyout his girlfriend who brewed Beamish with ex employees of the shutdown Beamish factory in Cork earlier this year…

      • Copyright & Piracy in the Digital Age

        Location: the Attic, Parr Street

Description: Join Joscelyn Upendran from Creative Commons UK, Ian Prowse (Amsterdam), and Maria Farrell from The Open Rights group and industry representatives to discuss the rights and wrongs of copyright theft and downloading.

The United States' Stop Online Piracy Act (SOPA) and the UK's Digital Economy Bill have have brought into focus the debate on copyright and control of online materials. Some argue for an end to all copyright, some argue for more open sharing, but with control (Copyleft), while others argue for the complete abolition of all copyright. Downloading is rife but under pressure - witness the closing down of Mega Upload and the extradition to America of hacktivists and those accidentally caught on the wrong side of the United States law. There's no doubt these are all new problems of the digital age, but the fight for and against copyright is nothing new. For musicians it is a double-edged sword; one minute it is allowing bands including The Arctic Monkeys to build a following which propels them to worldwide fame, and the next they face losing millions as the internet allows free access to all their hard-earned creativity -and maybe they can afford it, but what about others, musicians and writers, etc. who can't afford to let it all go for free. We may not find all the answers, but you will want to be a part of this debate featuring activists and local musicians and artists, all trying to make ends meet and make sense of the digital age.

      • Rathole Radio Roadshow 2012

        Location: Leaf Cafe, Bold Street

Description: Friday May 11th sees the return of the Rathole Roadshow for a 3rd successive year. The roadshow is a music event with a slight difference, a geeky interactive element. We’ll be connecting Rathole Radio fans around the world directly with artists and guests via message walls, chat rooms and even our fabulous audience-bot robot, built by Liverpool’s favourite boffin Mr Adrian McEwen. When triggered by fans online the bot will let off a burst of applause into the room and let them get involved, wherever they are.

In keeping with Rathole Radio itself the line up is eclectic but carefully selected, with an emphasis on local talent this time.

        We have:
The Corinthians – A Liverpool rap group who’ve christened their unique style “Scouse dub hop”. Blending elements of dub and reggae with the skills of some great MCs. They’ve supported Sugar Hill Gang, Ugly Duckling and the Jungle Brothers to name just a few, they know how to put on a show.
